iPod beats the Walkman brand in Japan

The image and the value of Sony among young Japanese people has evolved in recent years. Sony has been last to enter the digital media device market. After dominating portable devices for years with the Walkman, Sony missed an opportunity in 2005 when Apple launched iTunes.

iTunes revolutionized the way we think of music players. No longer was your portable music player just a device, but it came with easily downloadable content, with thousands of major labels signing up to their service. They also created a senseof being part of a community by creating ads that showcased their signature white ear buds. Suddenly it was cool to have those earbuds and everyone wanted them.

Meanwhile, Sony also owns a large library of content and has attempted to sell it online. In your opinion, why has the Walkman brand been unable to keep up with iPod even in Japan?
